The Spring Golden Shovel Award was awarded to Melynda Whetsel. A previous winner, Melynda’s yard looks wonderful. The Winter award went to Todd and Emily Wakefield at 1202 Luttrell Street for their fabulous holiday decorations. The competition is fierce. We will be adding previous winners in this category in the next few weeks!
The Fourth & Gill Woolly Bears in collaboration with the Fourth & Gill Neighborhood Organization were recently awarded a grant from the City of Knoxville Neighborhoods Dept. One of the items funded in the grant is materials to build a bulletin board for the Fourth & Gill Park. One side of the bulletin board will be devoted to Wildlife Habitat information the other side will be open for neighbors to post about lost pets, events, poems, favorite found doodles, etc…. The grants are awarded to projects that encourage neighbors to work together to improve their neighborhoods and build relationships along the way. We are putting a call out for volunteers to help build the bulletin board structure. All skill levels are welcome. We will be meeting in the park on Saturdays from 10-1 in April and Sundays from 10-1 in May. Shown is a picture of a bulletin board structure in the South Woodlawn neighborhood that we are modeling our design on. I will also include a list of materials that we will be needing. If you happen to have some of these materials laying around and would like to donate them to the project that will help us along with a very tight materials budget. To donate building supplies please contact Gerry at firstname.lastname@example.org.

You might have noticed the new “Historic 4th and Gill Neighborhood” street signs that have been installed over the past few weeks. The effort was lead by a fundraising committee, including Katy Hawley, Joe Miles, Kaye Osborne, Sue Russell, Brent Waugh, and Melynda and Bob Whetsel.
Not only did the neighborhood surpass its goal of $8,000 needed to purchase the signs, we did so in only three weeks—a week earlier than planned. As a result, the City of Knoxville was able to install nearly all the signs by early April, in time for the 2018 Home Tour.
We reached our goal through nearly 50 gifts of all sizes—thank you to the supporters who made Fourth and Gill’s historic district street signs possible, including:
Gabrielle Boudreau and Gordon Coker Thomas Boyd
Sam Crockett Howard Cyr and Katy Hawley
